Working With Children

Not so long ago, professions where one worked with children on a regular basis were fairly limited. If you stated that you worked with kids for a living, one could guess with a large chance of being correct that you were a teacher of some sort.

Today, many families have both parents working full time jobs in order to make ends meet, or to fulfill career dreams. This has given rise to a huge industry of child minding businesses which range from nanny services to daycares and after school programs. Whether you run a daycare from your own piece of Etobicoke real estate or volunteer at a Boys and Girls Club chapter, you will probably find that working with kids involved a whole range of safety issues you hadn't thought of before. These issues extend to conditions within the workplace and without as well as to both the cared for and the caregivers. Let's take a look at a few of them now.

One of the primary concerns of those who look after children as a part of their profession is health. For the first decade of their lives in particular, kids are like walking Petri dishes. Bacteria multiplies on each one and leaps from one child to the next, causing a vicious cycle of sickness which can also infect the care provider. In order to keep healthy, make sure that everyone gets their flu shots when available. Also, remind parents that children with flu, cold, or conjunctivitis symptoms should stay home until the possibility of contagion has passed.

Among the biggest concerns for professionals offering day long care to children today are allergies. Many more children are being diagnosed with potentially fatal allergies than ever before, and this means that vigilance is required on the part of the caregiver. If you are using a Toronto event catering service for a party or for regular meals, make sure that they are aware of any allergies amongst your wards. Likewise, any meals you prepare should be done with extreme caution, well away from any source of possible allergens.

Many professionals who work with children will find themselves organizing field trips of some kind. Whether you are going to the Charles W. Stockey Centre to tour the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame or to Seaworld, a field trip includes its own share of potential hazard. Good safety practice involves informing parents of the trip, down to posting the number on the license plate cover of the vehicle you're taking, and keeping careful track of all children through the proper amount of adult company and the 'buddy system.'

You may also want to do some advance preparation work when you are putting together a special event such as a field trip. A trip to a farm might include a call to the nutrient management services working with the farm before hand, in order to determine possible threats posed by chemicals and so on.

In most cases, good health and safety practices when working with children involve common sense. Staying vigilant, preparing beforehand, and lots of cleaning can take care of any issues before they come up. It doesn't matter whether you are a teacher or operate a daycare out of some Leaside real estate; proper procedure will ensure a safe and healthy environment for both you and the kids in your care.
